The Alexander 503 is affectionately know as the 'entry level' Alexander - but it is no student level instrument! Alexander horns are some of the most popular double horns of all time and can be heard throughout the world, including in the Berliner Philharmoniker. All Alexander horns are hand-made in Mainz, Germany with flawless workmanship and spectacular attention to detail.
The Alexander 503 is a close relative to the 1103 and was developed as a 'gateway horn' to create the iconic Alexander sound with the feel and free blowing qualities of a Paxman or Conn. The 503 has a larger Bell for greater projection and 4 valves inline to increase airflow and reduce the resistance. The thumb valve changes at 90deg and free flowing wrap through the open horn. The modern Minibal linkages allow the player to have a positive feel on every valve and change from Bb/F to F/Bb with only a screwdriver; no more strings!
WHY IS IT 'ENTRY LEVEL'? The 503 was the precursor to the 1103 so early iterations were manufactured with simplified bracing, no LH nickel guard, 4 valve Geyer wrap and duplicated tuning slides. This makes the horn marginally cheaper but no less impressive. Minor improvements and slight changes were made to produce the 1103, but the 503 was loved so much that they still produce them today.
The Alexander 503 has won the prestigious German Musical Instrument Prize, 1995 & 2005.
