Geoff Lawton (1928-2003) was a master engineer and a fabulous saxophonist. In the early 1960s, he decided he wanted to make a saxophone mouthpiece and experimented with many prototypes. He then settled on what was to become the classic Lawton design - a beautiful, great-sounding mouthpiece with sleek lines and a unique, innovative ligature. Geoff demonstrated his mouthpiece to the saxophonists in the legendary Count Basie and Stan Kenton Orchestras when they toured the UK. Very soon the entire sax sections of both bands were playing on Lawton mouthpieces. Geoff passed away in 2003 and Jason, his son, has continued the family business.
Many of the greatest saxophone stars in history have played on Lawton mouthpieces
Word quickly spread through the sax-playing community and many famous saxophonists started using Lawtons. These included masters such as Sonny Rollins, Paul Gonsalves, Frank Foster, Ernie Watts and Johnny Dankworth.
