John Cran, former Principal Bassoon, Sydney Symphony
"Richard’s woodwind repair work continues to be outstanding. Once again he has resurrected my old and tired Cor Anglais to a point where it feels almost new again. Precision re-corking, adjustments, thorough cleaning etc etc, it’s real quality work. Thank you." - Peter Duggan, Principal Cor Anglais, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra
Richard studied clarinet and composition at the Sydney Conservatorium, graduating as Student of the Year and did postgraduate study at the University of York in the UK, then established himself as a freelance clarinettist and saxophonist in London and the south of England. Richard was trained as an instrument repairer at the world famous woodwind maker Howarth of London, repairing in their London showrooms and later finishing new instruments for their factory in Worthing. Continuing his work with Howarths, he set up his own business in England which he ran for fifteen years, counting many top professional players and teachers among his customers (see testimonials). He returned to his native Sydney in 2007 with his wife Celia Craig and their two children. He initially set up his own business in Springwood, Lower Blue Mountains, before the family moved to Adelaide in 2011 when Celia won the Principal Oboe position with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Richard is now in demand by players from all over Australia, New Zealand and the UK. His skills are in maintaining efficient, reliable, airtight instruments, and always listening to his clients’ needs. Instruments regularly maintained by Richard stand out in quality and reliablility.
Richard played saxophones and clarinets with the internationally acclaimed British amplified new music ensemble Icebreaker, becoming Musical Director in 2000. Highlights include performances in Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, tours of Holland, UK and the USA, and appearances at Europe’s major music festivals. Icebreaker have recorded ten cds, often co-produced by Richard.
“There used to be classical musicians, jazz musicians and rock musicians; now, if Icebreaker is any guide, there are just musicians…” - The Birmingham Post.
Richard freelanced in the UK on clarinets and saxes with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Ballet and Scottish Ballet, London Contemporary Dance Theatre and others. Since his return to Australia he has appeared with the Sydney International Orchestra at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and Opera House and with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
